RegoCheck VIC was built from personal experience. After having my own car stolen — and the thieves fitting it with different number plates — I realised how easy it is for a vehicle to appear legitimate when it's not. A quick rego check could be the difference between peace of mind and an expensive mistake.

I also created the app with businesses in mind — like mechanics, dealers and service centers — who handle a high volume of cars where a simple test drive could lead to legal trouble if the registration has expired or the vehicle is unregistered.

Using your phone’s camera or an image from your gallery, the app scans number plates and VINs, checks whether the vehicle has been reported stolen, finds its make and model, and displays everything in a clean, easy-to-read format. Registration expiry and VIN are available on request. It also keeps a history of your searches — so no need to write anything down or re-type numbers. You can also easily share results directly from the app.

How do I check if a car is stolen in Victoria?

Type or scan the vehicle's number plate in RegoCheck VIC. The app checks it against the Victoria Police stolen vehicle register and tells you whether it has been reported stolen. The register only lists vehicles reported stolen in the last 90 days, so a vehicle that isn't listed hasn't been reported stolen in that time.

Is RegoCheck VIC free?

Yes. RegoCheck VIC is free on iPhone and Android, with no account, no sign up and no limit behind a paywall. The app is supported by ads.

What can I find out about a vehicle?

From a Victorian number plate the app shows whether the vehicle has been reported stolen and, where available, its make, model and year. For registration status, expiry date and VIN, the app takes you through the official Victorian registration check.

Can I search by VIN or chassis number?

Yes. Type the VIN or chassis number, or scan it with your camera, and the app checks it with the official Victorian registration check.

Which vehicles can I check?

Cars, trucks, motorcycles, caravans and trailers, and club permit vehicles registered in Victoria.

Does it work for other states?

No. RegoCheck VIC checks Victorian registrations only.
